Fall Safety Checklist Before an Auto Collision

As the weather changes, it becomes time to think about bad weather and how it affects your commute.  Are you prepared for an accident, blowout, or breakdown? Do you have what you will need to keep yourself safe in case of disaster?  Here are 15 things that should always be in your car when you’re driving anywhere.
  1. Your Cell Phone. OK, you don’t need me to tell you this. Have your cell phone available (not while you’re driving!) in case of emergencies. Make sure that it’s charged when you leave, and that you have a charging cable in the car if it’s not.  However, a great tip is to take an old phone that’s new enough to be on current networks, charge it up, turn it off, and stow it in the glove box.  Even if it only calls 911, it can save you in an emergency.
  2. First-aid kit. Have band-aids, adhesive tape, gauze pads, aspirin, antiseptic cream or ointment, antiseptic wipes and anything specific that you could need, like an epipen if you have allergies, or an inhaler for asthma. Throw a couple of blankets in as well in case you’re stuck on the side of the road for a long period of time.
  3. Fire Extinguisher. An extinguisher rated for Class B and Class C fires by the National Fire Protection Association, or NFPA will help keep you safe in the event of a fire. The NFPA says Class B fires are those that involve flammable or combustible liquids, such as gasoline, diesel fuel and kerosene. Class C fires involve energized electrical equipment such as switches, panel boxes and batteries.
  4. Three reflective warning triangles. There may be one of these in your emergency kit, but 3 will make sure that you’re seen from both sides and provide extra security.
  5. Tire gauge.Don’t wait until you have a flat. Tire pressure changes with the weather, and you can suddenly have low pressure that leads to a flat.  Check your tires periodically to keep yourself safe.
  6. Foam tire sealant. If your flat isn’t too bad, you may be able to repair it and save yourself a tow. Still, take it to a repair shop as soon as possible.
  7. Jumper cables. Also, know how to use them. Red to red, black to black.  You can really hurt yourself if you use them improperly.
  8. Flashlight and extra batteries.Spring for the waterproof flashlight, it’ll save you in a storm when you’re looking at the engine.
  9. Tow strap or tow rope.At least tested to 6,000 pounds.
  10. Multipurpose utility tool. You can fix a lot of small problems with a leatherman..
  11. Drinking water. Stay hydrated! In an emergency, you don’t want to not have water if you’re trapped.
  12. Non-perishable snacks. Get something good for energy, like a protein bar. They’re good to store and last a long time.
  13. Snow shovel. Try a retractable model to save space. You’ll be glad to have it when your tires are spinning in the snow!
  14. Cat litter.Same here. Works just as well as sand, and it’ll give you the traction to get out of a tight spot.
  15. Windshield ice scraper. Come on, you have to have this. Even if it’s the promotional one they give you at a football game, you need to keep one in your car so you can see where you’re going. Bonus points and karma if you get one with a brush and clean the roof of your car off before you drive.
Follow this list and you’ll be ready for almost anything.  Short of nuclear attack or alien invasion, there won’t be anything you can’t handle out there on the roads.  If you do get into an accident, Five Star Auto Body Repair is a Certified I-Car Gold Class Facility that has a high level of collision repair training.  In Arnold, Imperial, Fenton, and Oakville, they are the best shop close to you, and will repair your vehicle to factory condition with the most advanced techniques and newest training.  They also will work with your insurance company for you, to save you the hassle of working with them.
